Health Care Administration Job Description

Health care administrators manage and oversee healthcare facilities ranging from hospitals and physicians’ offices to chains of physicians’ clinics, and entire heathcare provider systems. Duties range from small, hands-on management tasks at lower levels of administration, to big-picture, long-term decisions at higher levels.

Lower-Level Healthcare Administration

At the lower levels of healthcare administration, managers and administrators may oversee a hospital department, a single clinic, a nursing home, or another type of clinical facility. These managers usually oversee many administrative functions, such as finances, personnel, patient admission, and daily operations, and may provide patient care as well.

Some of the responsibilities handled by lower-level healthcare managers might include:

  • Overseeing daily operations
  • Creating budgets
  • Developing and implementing policies
  • Responding to employee complaints and concerns
  • Evaluating personnel
  • Interviewing and hiring new employees
  • Overseeing marketing initiatives
  • Overseeing equipment needs
  • Providing some patient care
  • Responding to requests by higher-level administrators

Examples of these types of healthcare administrators are physical therapy directors, health information managers, managers of single physician practices or small group practices, and assistant administrators.

Higher-Level Healthcare Administration

Higher-level healthcare managers oversee larger establishments, such as an entire hospital, a system of hospitals, a large group practice or a chain of clinics. These administrators are less involved in the hands-on aspects of clinic operations, and more involved in general, large-scale decision making. They may direct other administrators and have assistant administrators to help them with making and carrying out decisions and policies.

Some of the responsibilities handled by higher-level healthcare managers might include:

  • Seeking out and implementing overall improvements in healthcare delivery
  • Developing and implementing system-wide policies
  • Reacting to changes in legislation
  • Determining and reacting to large-scale patient and employee needs
  • Determining overall direction of healthcare facilities and systems
  • Evaluating lower-level administrators and guiding their activities
  • Determining salary levels of employees and other administrators

Some examples of these types of administrator might include system chairperson, hospital CEO, group practice top administrator, and facility chain president.
